Hello Dolly Audition Information—Part Two

Hello gang! Below please find the monologues for Hello Dolly auditions. Girls, please read for Dolly, boys please read for Horace Vandergelder. Please also take note of the context I’ve provided for you. Always keep in mind who you are talking to and what your character wants through their speech. Print out the monologue, write on it, make notes, create a character (but obviously memorize it for your audition). Do your personal best and make it your own! I believe in all of you!

Mrs. Dolly Gallagher Levi—An indefatigable meddling matchmaker of strikingly dramatic appearance; a widow in her middle years.

Horace Vandergelder— Proprietor of a Hay & Feed Store in Yonkers, N.Y. and a client of Mrs. Levi’s. A widower of some means

DOLLY

[Context: This monologue takes place in the second scene of the first act. Dolly is talking to Ambrose Kemper, a young artist seeking to marry Horace Vandergelder’s seventeen-year-old niece, Ermengarde. Vandergelder doesn’t approve of Ambrose, so Dolly is trying to find ways for Ambrose to be financially independent. If he participates in the dance contest and wins, that will help. Talking to him about the restaurant makes her start to reminisce about her late husband.]

Monologue: Now there’s a man, Rudolph Reisenweber, at the Harmonia Gardens Restaurant on Fourteenth Street, I’ll give you a note for him and we’ll see if he can’t have you both entered in the polka contest tonight. The prize is a week’s engagement and a gold cup. Oh, the cups we won, Ephraim and me! My late husband Ephraim Levi believed in life and anyplace you could find it . . . cafes, ballrooms, yes even theatres! Why, even when times were bad, every Saturday night like clockwork down those stairs at the Harmonia Gardens we came, Ephraim and me . . .Now you go to the Harmonia Gardens this afternoon and say Mrs. Levi sent you and incidentally tell Rudolph that Dolly’s coming back and I want a table for two and a chicken for eight o’clock tonight!

VANDERGELDER

[Context: Also act once scene two, Horace Vandergelder just told his two clerks Cornelius and Barnaby that he is going to New York and he will come back with a wife. To celebrate his impending marriage, he says he is promoting Cornelius to chief clerk. Cornelius then asks if he can have one night off a week. This monologue is Vandergelder’s response.]

Monologue: So that’s the way you thank me for your promotion, is it? No sir, you’ll attend to the store as usual! Now get back to work! And don’t forget to put the lid on the sheep dip! Evenings off, marrying artists . . . Foolishness! Ninety-nine percent of the people in this world are fools . . .And the rest of us are in great danger of contamination! Why, even I was once young, which was foolish; and got married, which was foolish; and was poor which was more foolish than anything else. Then my wife died which was foolish of her; I grew older which was sensible of me; and became rich, friendless and mean, which in Yonkers is about as far as you can go!

Assignments for Principles 10/17/11

Assignments for Principles 10/17/11

1) Finish your journal entry/drawing about what your bedroom looks like. Describe your furniture, your belongings, the color of the walls, what’s on the floor, do you have windows, whose room is next to yours, sounds you can hear from your window in the street below, etc.

2) Write down for ACT II SCENE 4

Where you are EXITING to each time you run off stage. And why you’re exiting there (are you looking for someone? Did you think of a good place to hide? Etc.)

And

Where you’re coming from every time you ENTER the stage. And WHAT YOU WANT as you’re entering (did you see someone who you’re chasing, do you need to go to a different house? Etc.)

Sometimes you enter from the place you exited to, other times not. YOU decide. Use your imaginations to think of where you’ve been. Describe what rooms you’re going to and who you’re looking for in each one. I WLL BE COLLECTING THIS ENTRY/LIST.

Great work today everyone!!! :)

Updated Schedule

Hello Everyone!

The schedule below has been updated to reflect our plan of attack through the ENTIRE rehearsal period. Please note it is subject to change, and you are still expected to be available for every rehearsal date. Take special note of the FIRST DRESS REHEARSAL SCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY 11/26 - this is Thanksgiving weekend, and the rehearsal is MANDATORY!! You will not be permitted to participate in the show if you miss any of the dress rehearsals.

Below are links to reference materials. Please download them at your leisure :)

Historical Reference - Greek & Roman Comedies

Song List - Tells which characters are in each song. You will need to know this to read the rehearsal schedule.

Scene Breakdown - Tells which characters are in each scene, and which page numbers we have designated for each scene. You will need this to read the rehearsal schedule. Please note: acts are listed using roman numerals, and scenes are listed using arabic numerals. For example, II:3 means Act 2, Scene 3.

As always, you may email me with any questions: shall(at)archwood(dot)org

Happy Singing!

Monday, October 10, 2011

Journal Assignment For Principles:

Journal Assignment For Principles:

From the characters you put a * next to on your list, answer the following questions:

How did you meet?
What do you like about this person?
What do you dislike about this person?
What is one important memory you have with this person?

Remember to make these answers have relevance to the script, but to use your imaginations to elaborate and make up a very vivid memory. ALSO remember for your initial list, just because you don’t interact with someone doesn’t mean you don’t have a relationship to them. You all live in the same town. Have you seen each other in passing? Have you overheard things from the house you live next to? Etc.

***Special note for Proteans and Prologus: Write about your impressions of the characters in the show. Your viewpoints on them (as opposed to memories). This will give you motivation for why you jump into the play at certain points.

***Special note for Miles: You are writing about your history in battle in detail. Battles you’ve won, who you fought against, injuries you sustained, men you lost, men you wish you lost, medals you've won, etc.

Let your imaginations fly!!

Monologues!

Here are the monologues for auditions, whenever they may be. Please memorize one (gender appropriate) and create a character! Be expressive! Bring your best! :)

PHILIA (female)

My name is Philia. I cost 500 minae. Is that a lot of money? More than 300? Those are the two numbers that mix me up, three and five. I hope that captain doesn’t expect me to do a lot of adding. We are taught beauty and grace, and no more. I cannot add, or spell or anything. I have but one talent.

DOMINA (female)

Ah, Hero. Your father and I are off to visit my mother in the country. What a joy it would be were you to accompany us. But alas, the sight of anyone in good health fills my mother with rage. The time of farewell is at hand. Hysterium! Slave-in-chief, here are my husband's final instructions: In his absence his entire household is in your spotless care. Your word shall be absolute, your authority unquestioned. Farewell beloved son. Farewell thoughtful Hysterium. Senex, come along!

PSEUDOLUS (male)

His book of potions! And my pass to freedom! What I need is his potent sleeping potion. With a drop or two of that, the breath stops short, the eyes slam shut, the body hangs limp. I shall mix a few drops in a beaker of wine and give it to the girl to drink. I show Lycus that she has died of the Plague and tell Hero to dispose of the body. Then they to the boat, I to the hills, (Points to audience.) . . .and you to your homes, (looks through pages, then to audience ) I just remembered something frightening. I cannot read! Hero! Come out here. Call these pages off to me.

HYSTERIUM (male)

Who is she? Where is she from? A courtesan! Hero, this will never do. Never, never. Pseudolus! I might have known! Arranging an assignation between an innocent boy and a you-know-what! Hero, as you know, your mother and father placed me in charge of your innocence. Bid farewell to this young lady so that she can go about her-uh-business.

PROLOGUS (Pseudolus) (male or female)

Playgoers, I bid you welcome. The theatre is a temple, and we are here to worship the gods of comedy and tragedy. Tonight I am pleased to announce a comedy. We shall employ every device we know in our desire to divert you. It all takes place on a street in Rome, around and about these three houses. First, the house of Eronius, a befuddled old man abroad now in search of his children, stolen in infancy by pirates.

PROLOGUS (Senex) (male or female)

Permit me to remind you where we were when last you saw us. The virgin was waiting— that's what they do best—waiting here in the house for her captain to claim her. She has refused to drink the potion on religious grounds. Lycus skulks about the city, searching for Philia. Hero is at the baths where he sits and soaks. His mother is on the way to the country to visit her mother. A hundred and four years old, and not one organ in working condition. The courtesans, Miles Gloriosis and his mighty warriors, and Hysterium and Pseudolus are here. And I, SENEX, await the maid in my neighbor's house, hopefully about to sow my last oat, if memory serves. Let the play continue!

Copy of Email

I recently sent an email out to last year's email list (students and parents). In case you were not on the list, or we do not have your current email, the entire email is printed below.

Dear Students and Parents,

It breaks my heart that the strike has put our fall production of A Funny Thing Happened On the Way To the Forum on hold. However, we do have plans in place for whatever the next few weeks may bring, and we are eager to get started!

I have included you in this email because you/your child participated in one or both shows last year, or you/your child signed up to receive email communications regarding auditions during the first days of school this week. If you prefer not to receive future emails about Archbishop Wood's Performing Arts Department, please respond to this email with "unsubscribe" as the body of the email.

I will outline our plans in this email, but please continue to monitor the blog (http://abwvoice.blogspot.com) and/or the facebook group (http://www.facebook.com/groups/167038283361258/) for more information. Some audition information is already available on the blog, including links to download the audition sheet music for free via Google Docs. Practice mp3 files are available for free download from http://abwchoir.bandcamp.com as well. Audition monologues should be uploaded to the blog early this coming week.

Please practice as much as possible. We prefer that your auditions are memorized. More information will be forthcoming.

If the strike ends this week, we may hold a meeting to distribute materials and answer questions after school on the second full day for ALL students, with hopes of auditioning sometime next week. If the strike does not end this week, the meeting will be held (at a time to be determined) on Monday 9/19, with auditions the following week. Regardless of what happens with the strike, auditions will be concluded and a cast list finalized no later than Friday 9/30. We will do our best to accommodate schedules and transportation needs to ensure that all students have an opportunity to audition if they so choose.

Any further questions may be directed to me at shall@archwood.org. I thank you for your patience and flexibility during this difficult time, and we look forward to getting this production rolling!

Strike Updates

Dear Students and Parents,

Because the strike is continuing into this week, the play meeting originally scheduled for Monday 9/12 will be postponed.

If the strike ends during this week, we will plan to resume activities as soon as possible.

If the strike does not end this week, the meeting will be definitely be held on Monday 9/19, time still TBD.

I apologize for the delay, and Mariel & I hope to get the ball rolling as soon as we can! Have no fear.

Look for monologues to be posted early this week, and just keep singing! :)

~Stephanie

So we'll be singing Only Hope, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Can You Hear, Omnia Sol, Seasons of Love, and The Storm Is Passing Over, time permitting.

Concert Etiquette Rules

Hey Everyone,

I know some of you are planning to come to my concert tonight, so I thought I'd give you a little education on concert etiquette, just so you know the rules for classical concerts - it's a good thing to know! :)

1. Enter & exit the seating area only before or after a selection, never in the middle, preferably during applause if you are late or leaving early. Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes ahead of time to avoid being late. Classical audiences can be very unforgiving of disruptions.

2. Never talk during the music or in between movements of a piece. If you must say something, write it down in the margins of your program & show it to them instead.

3. Cell phones should be powered OFF during the performance. It is rude to text during the concert, and also the frequencies of the recording equipment, if present, can be disrupted by cell phone communications.

4. Food, drink, candy, gum, & mints should be consumed outside of the performance venue before or after the performance, or during intermission. They food & drink are not permitted in most venues, and candy, gum, & mints can be disruptive.

5. In general, do your best to keep silent during the concert. Avoid rustling in a purse, opening a velcro wallet, using cell phones, flipping noisily through the concert program, etc. Pay close attention to the intricate balance between silence and sound in the music as it performed.

6. It is customary to applaud the conductor when he/she comes onto the stage. He/she will typically bow to the audience before beginning the concert.

7. Some classical pieces of music are broken down into parts called "movements." In between these movements the music will stop for a few seconds. Do not applaud until the conductor has dropped his hands and has turned around to acknowledge the audience. It is a good idea to wait until several people have started clapping if you're not sure. It's embarrassing to be the only one applauding when it's not an appropriate time.

8. Whistling, yelling, or otherwise congratulating the performers is generally not appropriate for classical music concerts. Simply applaud with enthusiasm if you enjoyed the performance.

Hope you all enjoy the concert, or attend a classical concert sometime in your future to practice these guidelines! :)

Ring Mass!

Who: ABW Combined Choirs
What: Ring Mass for Junior Class!!
When: Thursday 4/7 report @6pm, mass @7
Wear: Winter Uniforms
Why: Because you want to have choir as a class in the near future, and it looks good for us to support the school, and represent our organization and its value to the whole school reputation.

If you skip school, you will NOT be permitted to sing, and you will meet one VERY UNHAPPY STEPHANIE when you return next week. Please leave a legacy of a strong choir for the upcoming grade levels. Show your support for the choral program by being in school, and singing for mass. It's all songs you know - I promise.

Gathering - Sing of the Lord's Goodness (The one that sounds like Take Five)
Alleluia - Lenten Gospel Acclamation (same as Ash Wed)
Gifts - Bread of Life (Tyler's fave)
Mass of Creation (with the random Lenten "Christ has Died" - same as Ash Wed)
Communion - How Beautiful, Without Seeing You
Meditation - Lord of All (Jessica's Bow version)
Take It On Home Song - O God Beyond All Praising

Choral Downloads for Preparation

You can download How Beautiful, Son de Camaguey, and (boys only) Sansa Kroma HERE.
