Monologues!

Here are the monologues for auditions, whenever they may be. Please memorize one (gender appropriate) and create a character! Be expressive! Bring your best! :)

PHILIA (female)

My name is Philia. I cost 500 minae. Is that a lot of money? More than 300? Those are the two numbers that mix me up, three and five. I hope that captain doesn’t expect me to do a lot of adding. We are taught beauty and grace, and no more. I cannot add, or spell or anything. I have but one talent.

DOMINA (female)

Ah, Hero. Your father and I are off to visit my mother in the country. What a joy it would be were you to accompany us. But alas, the sight of anyone in good health fills my mother with rage. The time of farewell is at hand. Hysterium! Slave-in-chief, here are my husband's final instructions: In his absence his entire household is in your spotless care. Your word shall be absolute, your authority unquestioned. Farewell beloved son. Farewell thoughtful Hysterium. Senex, come along!

PSEUDOLUS (male)

His book of potions! And my pass to freedom! What I need is his potent sleeping potion. With a drop or two of that, the breath stops short, the eyes slam shut, the body hangs limp. I shall mix a few drops in a beaker of wine and give it to the girl to drink. I show Lycus that she has died of the Plague and tell Hero to dispose of the body. Then they to the boat, I to the hills, (Points to audience.) . . .and you to your homes, (looks through pages, then to audience ) I just remembered something frightening. I cannot read! Hero! Come out here. Call these pages off to me.

HYSTERIUM (male)

Who is she? Where is she from? A courtesan! Hero, this will never do. Never, never. Pseudolus! I might have known! Arranging an assignation between an innocent boy and a you-know-what! Hero, as you know, your mother and father placed me in charge of your innocence. Bid farewell to this young lady so that she can go about her-uh-business.

PROLOGUS (Pseudolus) (male or female)

Playgoers, I bid you welcome. The theatre is a temple, and we are here to worship the gods of comedy and tragedy. Tonight I am pleased to announce a comedy. We shall employ every device we know in our desire to divert you. It all takes place on a street in Rome, around and about these three houses. First, the house of Eronius, a befuddled old man abroad now in search of his children, stolen in infancy by pirates.

PROLOGUS (Senex) (male or female)

Permit me to remind you where we were when last you saw us. The virgin was waiting— that's what they do best—waiting here in the house for her captain to claim her. She has refused to drink the potion on religious grounds. Lycus skulks about the city, searching for Philia. Hero is at the baths where he sits and soaks. His mother is on the way to the country to visit her mother. A hundred and four years old, and not one organ in working condition. The courtesans, Miles Gloriosis and his mighty warriors, and Hysterium and Pseudolus are here. And I, SENEX, await the maid in my neighbor's house, hopefully about to sow my last oat, if memory serves. Let the play continue!

Copy of Email

I recently sent an email out to last year's email list (students and parents). In case you were not on the list, or we do not have your current email, the entire email is printed below.

Dear Students and Parents,

It breaks my heart that the strike has put our fall production of A Funny Thing Happened On the Way To the Forum on hold. However, we do have plans in place for whatever the next few weeks may bring, and we are eager to get started!

I have included you in this email because you/your child participated in one or both shows last year, or you/your child signed up to receive email communications regarding auditions during the first days of school this week. If you prefer not to receive future emails about Archbishop Wood's Performing Arts Department, please respond to this email with "unsubscribe" as the body of the email.

I will outline our plans in this email, but please continue to monitor the blog (http://abwvoice.blogspot.com) and/or the facebook group (http://www.facebook.com/groups/167038283361258/) for more information. Some audition information is already available on the blog, including links to download the audition sheet music for free via Google Docs. Practice mp3 files are available for free download from http://abwchoir.bandcamp.com as well. Audition monologues should be uploaded to the blog early this coming week.

Please practice as much as possible. We prefer that your auditions are memorized. More information will be forthcoming.

If the strike ends this week, we may hold a meeting to distribute materials and answer questions after school on the second full day for ALL students, with hopes of auditioning sometime next week. If the strike does not end this week, the meeting will be held (at a time to be determined) on Monday 9/19, with auditions the following week. Regardless of what happens with the strike, auditions will be concluded and a cast list finalized no later than Friday 9/30. We will do our best to accommodate schedules and transportation needs to ensure that all students have an opportunity to audition if they so choose.

Any further questions may be directed to me at shall@archwood.org. I thank you for your patience and flexibility during this difficult time, and we look forward to getting this production rolling!

Strike Updates

Dear Students and Parents,

Because the strike is continuing into this week, the play meeting originally scheduled for Monday 9/12 will be postponed.

If the strike ends during this week, we will plan to resume activities as soon as possible.

If the strike does not end this week, the meeting will be definitely be held on Monday 9/19, time still TBD.

I apologize for the delay, and Mariel & I hope to get the ball rolling as soon as we can! Have no fear.

Look for monologues to be posted early this week, and just keep singing! :)

Hey actors & singers! - with the strike, you need to stay hyper vigilant about play stuff here & on the facebook if you have an account: http://www.facebook.com/groups/167038283361258/

If you know people who are doing play (even if they haven't done it before) - make sure they join the group if they are on facebook, or that they know about this blog if they're not.

Worst Case Scenario (strike continues past 9/16):
